What’s Your Criteria for Stocking Lip Balm?

You’re finally doing it. You’re stocking lip balm. People are always asking about it at the register; they need something to smack on those chapped lips. You want to direct them toward a product they’re going to love. You’ve read that it should be all-natural, vegetarian, vegan, etc., etc., etc. But what does it all mean?

What Is a Vegetarian Lip Balm?

Most lip balms are vegetarian-friendly. When it comes to a true “vegetarian” lip balm, you want to ensure it contains no animal products like tallow or animal byproducts that involve harming the animal. Though less stringent than vegan options, a product like a vegetarian tinted lip balm is sure to appeal to a large customer demographic (and some of the best brands offer products that are both vegetarian and vegan).

What Is a Vegan Lip Balm?

A vegan lip balm is the ideal product to stock at the front of the store. You don’t have to worry about beeswax, lanolin, or any ingredients derived from animals. These lip care products are great for everyone, regardless of diet or beliefs, so there’s a better ROI for you and your business.

The Case for Vegetarian and Vegan Tinted Lip Balms
Let’s take a moment to address tinted balms. A trustworthy vegan and vegetarian tinted lip balm should not contain the colorant known as carmine. Carmine is derived from a chemical produced with crushed, female cochineal insects. Insert a big sigh here because we know: it’s always the women who suffer for beauty trends.

Carmine was a hot topic in the beauty industry in the early 2000s-2010s. So, if you’re opting to stock tinted lip balms, go for a totally plant-based option that’s vegetarian and vegan. It’s bug-free while still offering a lovely sheer tint, thanks to plant-based ingredients like radishes and purple carrots.

Do Natural Lip Balm Ingredients Matter?

Lip balms without natural ingredients can contain petroleum-based ingredients, artificial fragrances and colors, and chemical additives. While they’re technically considered safe, they may not be safe for consumption, and your lips are that iffy area where you’d prefer not to mess around with “will I or won’t I accidentally ingest this?” So, natural matters.
